De Pere, WI – As part of a new product development process that began in 2011, The C.A. Lawton Co. has completed qualification and is now in full production with its first major agricultural equipment manufacturing customer. Lawton delivers the component machined complete, which provides the single-source responsibility so attractive to large equipment OEMs today. Lawton will have the flexibility to machine the casting produced in its foundry operation either onsite or in its Centerline facility.
The development process began with a collaborative product design phase, which led to the production of a prototype tool at Lawton. From the prototype tool, Lawton produced castings that were machined complete for use in testing in 2012. The successful testing led to production tooling, the subsequent prove-out, and the eventual ramp-up to production, which began in early April.
“This is a significant piece of business for us because it so thoroughly utilizes our capabilities and touches on so many of our strategic priorities. It’s in the agricultural market, it involved substantial collaboration around new product development, and it’s an integrated offering in that we provide castings, paint, and machining,” said CEO, Alex Lawton.
The C.A. Lawton Co. produces large grey and ductile iron castings as well as machined components while emphasizing its technical support and superior service. This approach provides product development, Value-Added Value Engineering (VAVE), and problem-solving assistance that many large equipment OEMs desire. On-site machining rounds out Lawton’s product offering to streamline the customer experience. Lawton added, “We really try to fill the need that many OEMs in our markets have for technical support and great service, which requires a higher level of communication and flexibility.”
